Kau Sai Chau

Arcadia (Half-day course)

Kau Sai Chau is the largest outlying island in Sai Kung and home to Hong Kong’s only public golf course. Kau Sai Village, in the south corner, is an old fishing settlement, which has retained its original character, with fishing tools from the old days and common medicinal herbs on display in the Kau Sai Village Story Room. There are also images and text descriptions presenting traditional fishing methods, the fishing heritage and local festivities.
The Hung Shing Temple on Kau Sai Chau is the most important historical building in the village. It is the shrine for Hung Shing, the guardian deity of all fishermen. This ornate ancient temple dates back more than a century. In 2000, it received the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award for Culture Heritage Conservation. The birthday of Hung Shing is celebrated every year on the 13th day of the second month of the lunar calendar. This major religious ceremony brings together the whole community. The village is dressed up with colourful lanterns and other decorations, and there are lion dance, dragon dance and Chinese opera performances to bring luck and fortune. Once a year, the happy sound of drums and gongs can be heard across the bay, and this quiet fishing village becomes a bustling place. Returnees and visitors in their thousands arrive for this special occasion.
The Kau Sai Village Story Room was established with the cooperation of the Kau Sai villagers and the support of The 55th Orient & Southeast Asian Lions (OSEAL) Forum. The Story Room, which was converted from the Kau Sai Village Office, displays mainly Kau Sai Village fishing and cultural relics, and Hakka herb specimens. The exhibits provide visitors with information about the history and culture of Kau Sai Village and the importance of nature conservation.
