Kat O

The Pearl of Mirs Bay (One-day course)

Kat O is an island west of Mirs Bay and east of Sha Tau Kok. The English name, Crooked Island, is inspired by its shape, which resembles an inverted Z. Kat O’s sinuous coastline makes it a natural shelter. It has always been a lucky anchorage for fishermen; thus, the Chinese name Kat O, which means auspicious bay.

Kat O once had a thriving population of more than 6,000 sea and land dwellers in the 1950s-1960s. Most of the villagers were fishermen or farmers; some ran a business on the island. Kat O islanders began migrating to Europe, Australia and other countries in the 1950s. During major festivals, like the decennial On Lung Ching Chiu or Tin Hau Festival, which falls on the 23rd day of the third month of the lunar calendar, many ex-islanders who now reside overseas return home. As the crowds gather for big parades, lion dances, the Fa Pao challenge and traditional folk performances, the quiet island becomes lively and bustling once again.
The Kat O Heritage Trail is a route with trailside interpretation plates presenting the local history, culture and natural scenery of the area. The trail is generally level, with stone steps leading to a hilltop lookout, where you can gaze across the picturesque Double Haven area. Owning to its rich historical and cultural heritage and stunning landscape, Kat O is truly a gem of the northeast.

No trip to Kat O is complete without a visit to the Kat O Story Room, in the Tin Hau Temple, the oldest building on the island. The gallery tells the story of the local culture, history, collective memories and intangible cultural heritage of the island, with well-designed, informative displays.
