Education

Hong Kong Geopark develops and operates educational activities for all ages to spread awareness of our geological heritage and its links to other aspects of our natural, cultural and intangible heritages. The signature Geopark Schools Programme for local schools offers a wide range of science popularisation activities to inspire student’s long-term interest in earth sciences, integrated with ecology and culture, as well as the concept of sustainable development. Educational activities planned for primary and secondary schools are as follows:

Rock Classroom

This activity comprises a workshop and a guided tour. After an introduction to rocks and fossils of Hong Kong at the workshop, students will visit Rock Academy, a large-scale outdoor exhibition of 28 rock specimens sourced from Hong Kong, and the Geopark Visitor Centre. This learning experience aims to enrich knowledge about Hong Kong’s geology and heighten geoconservation awareness.

Targets: Primary and secondary students.

Group size: 30 max.

Venue: Rock Classroom activity room, Lions Nature Education Centre, Tsiu Hang, Sai Kung.

Language: Cantonese or English.

Date: Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday (except public holidays).

Time: 10:00am - 12:00 noon or 2:00 - 4:00pm

Fee: Free of charge. Schools are required to arrange transport for students to and from the activity venue.

School Seminar

Staff of Hong Kong Geopark will visit the participating schools and introduce the unique features of Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark, including the geological history, rock types, natural attractions, ecology and cultural heritage. Such awareness will motivate students to cherish and protect our natural environment.

Topic: Discovering Hong Kong Geopark - An introduction to Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark, its geo-attractions, wildlife and cultural heritage.

Targets: Primary and secondary students

Group size: Minimum 40 per session.

Language: Cantonese.

Date: Monday to Friday (except public holidays).

Time: 9:00am - 5:00pm

Fee: Free of charge.

Geopark Schools Program

The Geopark Schools Programme is a key education programme of Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark. Working closely with local schools, Hong Kong Geopark rolls out a wide range of science popularisation activities to inspire student's long-term interest in earth sciences, integrated with ecology and culture and to promote the concept of sustainable development. Every successful participating school can make application to Hong Kong Geopark for up to 5 activities during the programme period, including not more than 2 school talks or workshops, 2 geopark land excursions and 1 geopark sea excursion.

*Given the current COVID-19 situation, science workshops, field trips, and other activities are still suspended. Only online lectures and exchanges activities will be available. Such arrangement will be in place during this year until further notice.

Target groups: Local primary and secondary schools supporting the geoparks concept and interested in promoting science popularisation activities for students.

Language: Cantonese

Programme period: Each school year (1 September to 31 August of the next year)

How to Register:

There is a quota of 20 schools for the 2021/22 Geopark Schools Programme each school year. To make the programme an ongoing effort and optimise effectiveness, 13 places are reserved for schools that took part in the programme last year, and the remaining 7 places are reserved for schools that did not take part in the programme last year.

Schools interested in joining the programme should complete the application form and return it to Hong Kong Geopark by email or fax between 23 August and 30 September before each school year. Places are limited and offered on a first-come-first-served basis. Applicants will be notified of the result by email and fax within 7 working days. Students Exchange Programme

Every year, Hong Kong Geopark together with sister geoparks in the region would coordinate a few bi-directional student exchanges for geopark schools.

As an example, Hong Kong and Itoigawa UNESCO Global Geoparks (UGGps) have been organising an annual mutual exchange programme since 2011, where students from Hong Kong travel to Itoigawa to visit the sister geopark and a local school for science education and cultural exchange. Vice versa for students from Itoigawa.
