The Hong Kong Science Museum and Hong Kong Geopark jointly held two science workshops on the theme of earth science on July 18 and August 28, 2021, respectively, to introduce the basic knowledge of rocks to the participants.
Hong Kong Geopark is located in the eastern part of Hong Kong. The rocks commonly found in Sai Kung are volcanic, while there are different types of sedimentary rocks in the northeastern part of the New Territories. Rocks can be divided into three main types: igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks, and metamorphic rocks! What are the characteristics of various rocks? Is there any simple way to distinguish them?
In the workshop, the geopark staff used visual presentations and rock samples to make a lively explanation of the rocks. Participants of the workshop can touch various rocks, feel for themselves, and understand the different types of rocks. They participated enthusiastically in the interactive game. Participants also asked questions on the spot and interacted with the staff.

A collaborative effort was launched in May 2021 by Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark and Hațeg UNESCO Global Geopark, in Romania, to arrange a three-week online exchange activities for young people in the two areas.
Participants expressed that they were pleased to make new friends overseas through this activity, they enjoyed the experience very much. In particular, they have learnt about each other's geoparks, city, lifestyle, culture, history and language. To these two groups of young people, who live five time zones apart, it was really a new and extraordinary experience. They also wish to visit their peers' home country or city to meet them face to face.
Hong Kong Geopark will continue to work with other GGN members in the future to improve and promote this model of cross-regional youth exchange. It is a great way to broaden our students' knowledge, perspectives and vision, and is good training for communicating and collaborating with people from different cultures.

The gallery features around 30 sets of interactive exhibits, models and installations for visitors to better understand the causes of natural phenomena. It also showcases the rich diversity of Hong Kong's geology and displays invaluable and colourful minerals as well as rock specimens.

The amazing journey will inspire the public to consider the human impact exerted on the planet's system. The interactive models, installations and typhoon simulator at the gallery offer visitors unique insights into the power of nature.
The breathtaking geology of Hong Kong is also featured at the Earth Science Gallery through its display of rock specimens from different geological ages, such as samples from the hexagonal rock columns in the High Island region, part of the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark. Visitors can view the stunning world-renowned scenery of the Geopark and learn more about Hong Kong's geology.

The Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark (HKUGGp) Siu Ying Story Room opens to the public on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, from 27 February 2021.
Siu Ying Story Room is the fruition of joint efforts made by the seven Hing Chun Alliance villages of Sha Tau Kok (Lai Chi Wo, So Lo Pun, Sam A, Mui Tsz Lam, Kop Tong, Ngau Shi Wu and Siu Tan) and the Hong Kong Geopark. The story room occupies the space used by the expansion building of the former Siu Ying School at Lai Chi Wo. Established in the 1920's, the school provided primary education to children from the seven villages for several decades. It is an important piece of collective memory.
The content of the exhibition mainly comes from oral history interviews with the villagers and the historical materials they generously donated. Arranged in four themes ― History of Hing Chun Yeuk and the Seven Villages; Siu Ying School; Tai Ping Ching Chiu; Farming and Trade ― the exhibition presents the heritage and different lifestyles of the region. It is a wonderful reproduction of rural communities in bygone days.

The 7th "Recommended Geopark Guide" assessment was successfully completed on January 28 2021. Assessment work was conducted by a panel comprising representatives of "Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department", "Association for Geoconservation, Hong Kong", and "Travel Industry Council of Hong Kong". At the end, 7 candidates passed the assessment and became "Provisional Recommended Geopark Guides".
"Provisional Recommended Geopark Guides" need to pass a six-month probation period before they can be confirmed as an official "Recommended Geopark Guide" (R2G). To maintain their status, R2Gs are required to pass a biennial reassessment.
It is hoped that the new batch of "Provisional Recommended Geopark Guides" can continue the excellent tradition of R2Gs – become role models of other tour guides, dedicated to promoting conservation of the natural environment, cultural heritage and the global geoparks concept, share and convey earth science knowledge and appreciate the cultural heritage of the geopark communities, provide tourists with high-quality guided tours, and support the conservation, education and sustainable development of Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark.
